Waupaca Foundry welcomed members of the Northeast Wisconsin Bird Club to its landfill property located north of Waupaca, WI. The Property is approximately 200 acres and includes several types of habitat (including grasslands, brushy areas, mature woodlands, and a wetland sedge meadow) that have been recognized to support a variety of bird species.

After learning about the site and Waupaca's offer to host, the Northeast Wisconsin Bird Club performed an initial visit on June 25, 2015 to survey the property for local bird species and determine the suitability of the site for possible ongoing inclusion in nationally organized bird migration surveys. June 25 was a beautiful summer day, and club members efficiently identified over 41 confirmed species of birds using visible sightings as well as bird call identification. Needless to say, the short survey visit was classified as a tremendous success by the club with members initiating planning to review the site during the upcoming September and May bird migrations.

On a foggy September 26, 2015, the Northeast Wisconsin Bird Club organized a more extended return visit to identify the many varieties of birds present on the site. Despite the low visibility, a very nice list of 40 species (including 10 species of Sparrow and a red-headed woodpecker sighting) were identified. This impressive list can be seen at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S25185473. Incredibly, many of the species recognized were independent of the original species viewed in June!

Overall, everyone in the group seemed very impressed with the site and had a great time. A Spring migration visit is in the works, and from Waupaca's observations during that time of year, it should prove a lot of fun for the club's members with a lot of bird diversity being recognized.
