With TISAX Certification, Foundry Shows it is Modern, Forward-Thinking
Megan Mulholland | Waupaca FoundryWhen most people think of a foundry, images of molten metal, industrial machines, and rugged workspaces come to mind. Yet, in today’s connected world, even the oldest industries embrace modern challenges, including cybersecurity. Waupaca Foundry recognizes the critical role of information security, highlighted by its recent TISAX certification. This accomplishment shows the supply chain’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining trust with customers and partners.
TISAX, or Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange, is a rigorous certification framework designed by the European automotive industry. It ensures companies meet high standards for information security, prototype protection, and data protection. Achieving this certification requires advanced technical measures and teamwork across departments.
Like ISO/IEC 27001, TISAX builds upon that framework by incorporating additional requirements tailored to the automotive industry's information security, ensuring compliance with sector-specific standards.
Why TISAX Matters
Waupaca Foundry produces gray and ductile iron castings found in automotive engines, suspensions, braking systems, drivelines, and more.
“Many of our customers are European automotive manufacturers or suppliers to the global automotive industry,” said Derek Mischler, Manager of Information Security at Waupaca Foundry.
“These companies rely on TISAX to evaluate and trust their suppliers’ ability to protect sensitive information. Without this certification, we probably wouldn’t be in the running for certain projects.”
Valid through Aug. 1, 2027, Waupaca Foundry has demonstrated compliance with specific types of data protection, including Confidentiality, High Availability, and Information with High Protection Needs.
The Path to Certification
Securing TISAX certification was no small feat. It involved an 18-month journey of preparation, self-assessment, and third-party audits. The process required cross-functional collaboration, from information technology and human resources to legal, purchasing and supplier quality teams.
“I’m incredibly proud of the IT team and everyone who contributed to this effort,” said Diana Elrod, Senior Manager of Supply Chain. “When Derek first approached us about TISAX, it seemed like just another compliance task. But as we worked through it, we realized how essential it is for protecting not only our data but also our customers’ supply chains.”
The process included implementing new policies and training employees on cybersecurity awareness. “We focus on quietly doing the right things — building strong systems and ensuring they’re effective,” Mischler said.
Benefits Beyond Certification
TISAX certification brings significant advantages to Waupaca Foundry and its partners. By aligning with this standard, the Foundry can:
- Enhance trust: Customers can be confident in our dedication to meeting industry cybersecurity standards.
- Ensure continuity: Further investment in cybersecurity continues to reduce the risk of disruption of business operations.
- Open new opportunities: Being listed on the TISAX platform makes Waupaca Foundry visible to potential partners prioritizing cybersecurity in their supply chains.
Looking Ahead
Achieving TISAX is just the beginning. To maintain certification, Waupaca Foundry will undergo re-assessments every three years and continue to refine systems as new cybersecurity challenges emerge.
“Cyber incidents are on the rise, and attackers do not discriminate,” Mischler said. “Our certification is a proactive step to ensure resilience. It’s about protecting not just our operations but the trust our customers place in us.”
“This achievement shows Waupaca Foundry is more than just a place where iron is cast,” Director of Marketing Sara Timm added. “We’re a progressive, forward-thinking manufacturer committed to excellence in every aspect of our operations.”
